Most of the 31 short stories which comprise this collection were published between 1982 and 1994. As a group, the stories cannot easily be fit within a single category, since they vary considerably with respect to both content and style. Many of them (although not classic examples of the genres) involve elements of fantasy or science fiction, whereas others are more conventional in content and structure. Editors and readers have used descriptive terms such as imaginative, charged with energy, irreverent and humorous to describe the stories. If there is a common thread among the pieces in this collection, it is that they involve unusual people who because of their own doing or chance circumstances find themselves embroiled in unusual situations. Many of the stories revolve around events in the life of scientists and academicians. Others involve people who are rock stars, writers, critics, or athletes. Among the magazines and literary journals in which many of the stories in the collection have been published are Oui, Sou'wester, Permafrost, Long Shot, Outerbridge, Phoebe, The Florida Review, The Connecticut Writer, Space and Time, Descant, New Mexico Humanities Review, The Chattahoochee Review, Red Cedar Review, Clifton Magazine, Midland Review, Last Wave, Potboiler, Science Fiction Age, The Leading Edge: The Magazine of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, Salome, Scrivener and Arete: The Journal of Sports Literature.
